“Our Lord! Grant us the good of this world and the Hereafter, and protect us from the torment of the Fire.”

Read the verses first and then come back for an understanding of what it means and what lessons can be taken away from them.

Allah's Creations V28-39

The one who created the heavens and the Earth is an entity which must be all powerful. You would expect the creator of its creation to know what is best for its creation. Similarly, this would mean the creator would know what is harmful. If we take a minute to actually look around us and ponder on the wonders of this complex world, we come to the conclusion that we must have a creator. That same creator knows what actions would benefit us and also give us prohibitions. The prohibitions of that which is prohibited is a blessing in itself. Allah keeps us away from that which does us more harm than good.

We are then introduced to 3 of Allahs creations. Allah says that a human authority will be placed on Earth before a human is even created. The angels respond by saying "Will you place in it someone who will spread corruption there and shed blood while we glorify your praises and proclaim your holiness?". Allah replys, "I know what you do not know." The angels speculated, whilst Allah knows the apparent and the hidden. Allah knows that there is more good that resides of successive generations is many times greater than the bad. As humans have free will, it is up to us to choose our paths. The ones who do good with their free will, will be better seen as above all other creations! This also means that the one who does bad with their free will, will be seen as worse than all other beings. We've been honoured with free will so we should show appreciation of this honour by doing good. End of the day, Allah is not in need of it so it will only help me and you if we were to do good.

The conversation continues as Allah teaches Adam the names of all things and as he is presented to the Angels. The Angels are asked if they can name so and so which they're unable to do so and quite rightly reply "Glory be to you! We have no knowledge except what you have taught us." Adam is asked to name the same so and so in which Adam is able to do so. This was to show the Angels that Adam was the superior successive generation. We can take away how Allah used questioning to give the realisation to the Angels rather than an answer. Allahs care and kindness is apparent as this is a great way to help thinking. We should aim to do the same when in discussions with those that are peculiar about Islam. We can also take away the lesson of being humble. Sometimes we come across something we don't understand and may never understand. It is best to surrender yourself to Allah and assume that it is our reasoning is flawed.

The conversation proceeds with the angels being asked to bow to Adam as a sign of respect. Iblis was also asked to protrate. Iblis was the name of shaytan before his fall from grace. Iblis is like us, he has free will. Using that free will, being one of the best creations which allowed him to being amongst the angels. What an honour! However, this was short lived as he decided not to listen to the command of Allah. This is where racism was born! Iblis objected Allahs order as he felt as though he was superior as he was made of smokeless fire and Adam was made of mud. We have the same free will that Iblis has, we can either do good with it and become better than even the Angels or refuse to do so and become the worst of the worst.

Adam was left to live in paradise with his wife freely with one exception, "but do not approach this tree, or else you will be wrongdoers." Satan deceived them leading them to their fall from the blissful state they were in. Although they were deceived and both sinned. They were later forgiven due to repentance! That is the difference between the wrong doings of Iblis & Adam. One didn't repent, whereas the latter did. Both creations were brought down to Earth as sworn enemies.

May Allah keep us away from the whispers of shaytaan and keep us on the straight path, Ameen.
