“Our Lord! Grant us the good of this world and the Hereafter, and protect us from the torment of the Fire.”

Read the verses first and then come back for an understanding of what it means and what lessons can be taken away from them.

Precise and Elusive Verses V7-9

The Glorious Quran is definitive all throughout and there is no doubt about this at all. So what is meant by elusive verses in V7? What are precise verses of Al Quran? Those verses which are precise are obvious and there is not doubt about it. An example being Allah being one. There is nothing before Allah and he is the King of kings! The creator of the heavens and the earth. The creator of the universe we reside in. The creator of you and me. These are verses that there can be no confusion found. Those verses that are elusive are not elusive in meaning but elusive in our limited understanding. A great example of this is the combination of letters that found in the Quran without any meaning, Alif Laam Meem. We know that reciting each letter gives us 10 hasanah, but that is as far as we know. We do not no anymore or anything less. Another example would be how Allah resides on the Arsh. Do we believe this? Yes. Do we understand how Allah SWT resides on the Arsh? No. Our minds cannot comprehend this. To ask of the nature of such a question is biddah, so we should be careful. I like to remind myself with the example of the phrase Day of Judgement. Is this Day 24 hours? No. So just because we understand something due to the lingo society has raised us with, doesn't necessarily mean that we can use our own interpretation. We should rather look for those whom have studied our Prophet SAWs way of life and how he was conveyed these verses.

We come to the next verses where two duas are said by the knowledgeable. "Our Lord! Do not let our hearts deviate after you have guided us. Grant us your mercy. You are indeed the giver of all bounties" meaning do not let us become ignorant like the people from the start of the surah. They deviate and create their own interpretations and have transgressed so far that they venerate Jesus PBUH. The Quran was sent down as a guide so do not let misguidance incline you away from the truth.

"Our Lord! You will certainly gather all humanity for their promised day - about which there is no doubt. Surely Allah does not break his promise." Allah does not lie about the Day of reckoning so we use this as motivation to stay upon the correct path and steer clear of that which will trap us.

May Allah help us understand the Quran in the way he had his messenger reveal it, Ameen.
