“Our Lord! Grant us the good of this world and the Hereafter, and protect us from the torment of the Fire.”

Read the verses first and then come back for an understanding of what it means and what lessons can be taken away from them.

Qualities of the Believers V1-5

Alif-Lam-Mim. We know that each letter in the Quran brings us 10 Hasanath (good deeds). But what do they mean? Verse 3 tells us that a believer is one that believes in the unseen. This is the belief in Allah, the Angels, and the day of reckoning. These letters are unknown and only Allah has knowledge of the meaning or purpose, and that is how we should keep it.

There is no doubt in this book. Meaning that you must have full certainty in it! Believing partially and not taking the book as a whole would mean there is doubt i.e. you do not have full certainty in it. You cannot be the one who has doubts over the revelation and contents of the Quran and be called a true believer. This book is a book of guidance which means sticking to it. Guidance dispels misguidance. The guidance is used for this dunya as well as for your hereafter. It is used for your fundamentals as well as your minor issues. To have guidance is to have Taqwa. And when you have Taqwa, you have the true guidance in the form of being aware of the one true message and are helped to follow that message.

The one who earns piety is the one who has submitted himself to Allah with no hesitation, establishing prayer and donating from what Allah has provided them. What we earn was truely never ours to begin with! Allah has given us a loan to feed ourselves with. Hence when Allah has said "donate from what We have provided for them", it means as Allah has given you rizk through his mercy, attain goodness for yourself by donating to your needy brothers. It was never actually yours to begin with!

We are told to establish prayer. What does this mean? Is it a sense of physical movement? Is it uttering words you have simply memorised? To establish prayer is to have your mind present before your Lord. To fulfil the obligations and conditions such as ablution and niyah (intention). To establish anything, it must be set up on a firm or permanent basis. The prayers we have are 5 times a day. If a person misses their prayer or is mindless whilst in it, have they truly established the prayer?

These are the qualities of true believers and if I've made any mistakes, may Allah correct my mistakes and keep me away from the hell fire, Ameen.
